COHOUSING OBSERVATIONS
Hal Mead
Cohousing has grown from a curiosity in the 90's into a movement now with a lot of enthusiasm and energy especially with higher energy costs and a focus on a wide variety of environmental issues centering around global warming. The first 10 years of Cohousing was a curiosity that may have died out. The 2nd 10 years of Cohousing have matured with added energy and variety as it has spread.
The next 10 years for Cohousing will continue this variety and energy probably with increased help from governments, trusts, and foundations as the word begins to get out that this building and investment in communities on a small scale is good for the environment, governments, and everyone. The social and environmental problems we are now beginning to face will require the help of everyone working together.
The Conference ended with everyone singing the cohousing song.-
THE COHOUSING SONG
There’s no housing like CoHousing!
Like no housing we know.
Everything about it is appealing.
Common House and all the units, too.
We designed it from floor to ceiling,
And now we’re seeing it all come true.
There’s no people like CoPeople,
They strive for community.
Anonymous suburbia this sure won’t be!
We’re neighborhood and we’re family.
Young and old are living here in harmony,
Let’s get on with the show!

WHAT IS COMMUNITY?
Community is more than a place where people live, work, and raise their children. A true community is made up of relationships among and between people living whole and interdependent lives. It includes, too, the natural world-plants and animals, the earth and the elements-as well as the human and built world. An ideal community is the locus for education, economy, culture, and our civic, social, and spiritual life. There, the best in each of us is nurtured and encouraged; there, we are supported during our difficulties and accepted always. There we feel we belong. Community Service - Yellow Springs, Ohio
